Work Release Is ADC Custody

Work release changes where an approved participant may be for a limited period. It does not end the ADC commitment. The official Work Release and Work Force page identifies the program as part of the detention center’s operations. The Facility Map research describes the Iron Building as a minimum-custody ADC component. Its records remain centralized with the regional detention center rather than forming a separate released-person roster.

This distinction prevents a common mistake. A participant may enter the community for an authorized activity, then return under ADC rules. That event is not a release transaction. An actual discharge occurs only when the detention center relinquishes custody under the governing order, sentence calculation, or transfer authority. The record should identify that boundary.

Use precise words when sharing the result. “In work release” describes custody status. “Released from ADC” describes a later custody event. “Transferred” means a different agency took control.

Confirm an Iron Building Release

The ADC does not publish a distinct Iron Building inmate archive or recent-release feed. Verification starts with the regional ADC system. Its Inmate Records page lists the standard current fields, including current charges, court status, bond, the next court date, and a calculated release date for a sentenced person. It also says staff can confirm only people who are currently incarcerated and cannot confirm former inmates or people in transport.

That current-only limit is important for work release. A person may be away on approved movement, returned to a different ADC unit, transported, discharged, or transferred. A single “not confirmed” result cannot choose among those paths.

1. Identify the correct person, approximate ADC booking, and court locality.
2. Ask the ADC information route only about present custody, without treating a no-result as release.
3. Check a saved Virginia Jail VINE notice for an affirmative reported release or transfer.
4. Review the General District or Circuit Court file for the order, sentence, bond change, or revocation.
5. Request the centralized ADC release transaction and trace any receiving agency it names.

A release alert should still be matched to the right person and event. Name matches can be wrong, and a transfer event does not mean entry into the community. Request the Actual ADC Discharge

A retrospective work-release question belongs with the ADC records custodian. The ADC FOIA channel accepts requests through its listed online form or email, by phone, or by mail. The request should identify existing records, not demand that staff draw a conclusion. Include the adult’s full name, useful identifiers, approximate booking dates, and a narrow date range.

Ask for the booking or intake record and the transaction that shows the actual date and time ADC relinquished custody. Request the release reason or disposition code and the receiving agency or destination if the event was a transfer. If work-release placement dates matter to the legal question, request the existing placement or movement records by name, while recognizing that exemptions may apply. Do not call an authorized daily movement a discharge.

Virginia FOIA allows actual-cost charges, and no fixed ADC release-record fee was found. Ask for electronic copies and a cost estimate. Covered requests generally use the response framework in Virginia Code § 2.2-3704, subject to the statute’s requester rules, exemptions, deposit provision, and possible extension. A no-record response must not be recast as proof that the person was never in the program.

Prince William Release Orders

Work release and pretrial release are not the same. Prince William Criminal Justice Services may supervise a defendant released by court order while charges remain pending, including an intensive form that can involve electronic monitoring. Work release, by contrast, is described in the research as ADC custody. Check the order and agency rather than relying on the fact that the person spends some time outside a secure unit.

Adult court records can explain the legal status. General District Court handles misdemeanors and preliminary felony stages. Circuit Court contains felony adjudications and appeals. Review disposition, sentence, suspended time, bond, probation, appeal, and revocation entries. A court sentence may explain why release was due, but the ADC calculates eligible local dates and records the actual custody transaction.

ADC Work Release Dates

The ADC states that its Inmate Records unit calculates release dates for Prince William sentences from one day through 12 months. A term of one year or longer will likely move into VADOC’s state calculation. Work-release placement does not create a second formula or prove that the projected date became final. Jail credit, court amendments, other holds, and the governing sentence can affect the result.

The ADC’s general release-time page says scheduled releases begin at 7:30 a.m. daily. It does not guarantee completion at that hour, establish a work-release-specific exit time, or publish the names of people released. For a future local date, ask ADC Inmate Records. For an event that has passed, request the actual transaction. If the record shows a state transfer, continue with the VADOC locator and state records process.

Transfers Beyond Work Release

A participant can leave the minimum-custody component without leaving confinement. Movement back to a more secure ADC unit remains within the same regional system. Transfer to VADOC, another local jail, federal authorities, or ICE ends ADC control but begins or continues custody elsewhere. The destination field is therefore as important as the date.

For a VADOC transfer, search the statewide Inmate and Supervisee Locator by seven-digit DOC ID or the supported name fields. For ICE, use the official detainee locator after the ADC record documents the handoff. Federal BOP records are searched separately. Each result has limited scope. None serves as a general Prince William work-release archive.
